Since its formation Cantores has raised over £20,000 for various local charities including; Pilgrims Hospice, SUStain, Demelza House, Kent Air Ambulance, and local church restoration funds.
A few years ago, Cantores Dominicae adopted Kiangari Secondary School near Nairobi. The first funded project, to provide electricity to the school site, cost £1,200. As you can imagine, life was changed forever by this innovation. We take the use of electricity for granted and it is hard to comprehend how the teachers, staff and pupils managed without it.
A choir member was in Kenya in the spring and drove up to the school to see how they were progressing. He told us:
It is difficult to over-estimate the benefit which has been provided by Cantores raising the money to connect the electricity and the use which is being made of the computers and books donated by members.
The school is gradually installing lighting and power points as funds become available. Parents have built (self help) an IT room and library building which is about 40' x 60'. This has been wired up and will soon be painted and equipped with work stations and shelving. When it is finished it is intended that the facility will be made available to the local community outside school hours.
I hope that Kenya Telcom can be persuaded to install a Dish to provide access to the Internet for Distance Learning.
In the meantime, the Head Teacher, Deputy Head, Bursar and School Secretary have working computers which has made a big difference to running a school with 295 pupils!
Word is spreading of the improved facilities and more children are seeking places.
Redundant computers, school text books and reading books are still required.
The photos below show a Cantores representative who visited Kianghari School presenting the head girl and head boy with a cheque from Cantores Dominicae.
